Person wearing suit and tie

Tying a tie is a simple skill that can elevate your look for formal events, work, or special occasions. Whether you need to tie a Windsor knot, Four-in-Hand, or Half-Windsor, this guide will walk you through the basics quickly and clearly.

How to Tie a Tie: Step-by-Step

Preparing the Tie

  • Drape the tie around your neck with the wide end on your right side and the narrow end on your left.

  • The wide end should hang lower than the narrow end by about 12 inches (depending on your height and the tie length).

Tying a Four-in-Hand Knot (Classic and Easy)

  1. Cross the wide end over the narrow end.

  2. Wrap the wide end behind the narrow end.

  3. Bring the wide end across the front again.

  4. Pull the wide end up through the loop around your neck.

  5. Pass the wide end down through the knot in front.

  6. Tighten by holding the knot and sliding it up to your collar.

Tying a Windsor Knot (Full and Symmetrical)

  1. Start with the wide end longer on your right.

  2. Cross the wide end over the narrow end.

  3. Bring the wide end up through the neck loop from underneath.

  4. Pull the wide end down to the left.

  5. Wrap the wide end behind the narrow end to the right.

  6. Bring the wide end up through the neck loop again.

  7. Pull it down through the loop you just created in front.

  8. Tighten and adjust the knot to be centered.
